American Impressionist Painter, 1858-1925 American painter and illustrator. His formal education was limited, and at 17 he was apprenticed to the painter George Loring Brown of Boston. He was one of the first scholarship students admitted to the school of art sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and took classes there in 1877 and 1878. After spending several years illustrating magazine articles on the Zuni Indians of New Mexico, he decided to study abroad and in 1883 left for Paris. There he studied at the Acad?mie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. During the five years he spent in France he became intimately acquainted with the countryside around the villages of Grez-sur-Loing and Giverny. Gustaf Wilhelm Palm
Swedish, 1810-1890,Swedish painter. He entered the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm in 1828, where he was a student of Carl Johan Fahlcrantz. Following a tour of Norway he went, via Copenhagen, to Berlin and Vienna for three years in order to seek a cure for an eye illness. He was influenced there by Biedermeier painting and Ferdinand Georg Waldm?ller, and also by the architectural painters Jakob Alt (1789-1872) and his son Rudolf Alt.
Arnoldus Bloemers
born at Amsterdam in 1792, painted flowers, fruit, and animals. He was instructed by Antonie Piera, but principally imitated Van Huijsum. He died at the Hague in 1844. The Rotterdam Gallery has a flower-piece by him.
Dosso Dossi
1479-1542 Italian Dosso Dossi Locations Italian painter of the Ferrarese school, whose real name was Giovanni di Niccolo de Luteri. He may have been a pupil of Lorenzo Costa, but was certainly influenced by Giorgione, Titian, and Raphael. He often collaborated with his brother Battista, a landscape painter. Dosso Dossi is first recorded in Mantua, but after 1514 he executed many decorative works for the ducal palace and churches of Ferrara, including frescoes, pictures, and cartoons for tapestries. Both his landscapes and portraits show originality and imagination. He was a friend of Ariosto, who mentions him in Orlando Furioso. His works include Circe in the Woods (Borghese Villa); The Three Ages of Man (Metropolitan Mus.); The Standard Bearer, Scene from a Legend, and Saint Lucretia (National Gall. of Art, Washington, D.C.).
